hello and welcome to this edlio study hall intro to the edlio Sams my name is Taylor I'm a trainer at edlio and I'll be leading you through today's session on how to get comfortable in your edlio Ms dashboard now before we get started a few notes of housekeeping um if you have any questions after today's session you can always search Our Help Center or open a support ticket via the intercom tool on your dashboard I'm going to go ahead and show you where you can find that or you can always reach out to client success at leo.com I'd also like to encourage you to attend a live study hall session if any questions come up in recorded session you can always jump in to these ongoing learning sessions to go ahead and have the opportunity to ask a live Q&A see demos so on and so forth as you can see their study hall sessions divided for different features of the CMS to help you get comfortable in the CMS and create as engaging as a website as possible now in today's session the goal is that you buy the end will feel more comfortable navigating the and Leo CMS with the user interface and that you know how to navigate all key features we are going to focus on the features that allow you to update your homepage so that you can edit existing content add new information and keep keep your site fresh I'll also show you how you can access support resources so what are those features that um I am referring to again your key features to your homepage we are going to go over today including your site navigation menu all the media on your homepage whether you have a homepage Shuffle or video um Spotlight messages the links on your account on your homepage and more so with that let's go ahead and jump into our Dash important now right at the top I want to go ahead and point out the intercom tool I was mentioning anywhere that you go on your dashboard in the bottom right hand corner of the screen you can click the add Leo red e and open our help support you're able to search for help as well as send a message this message function is uh very helpful because you are going to immediately open a chat with Eddie our AI agent who's going to help you um search The Help Center so that you don't have to hurt her search The Help Center yourself Eddie's going to pull the resources that can best answer your question in the immediate if that does not answer your question or you need to open a text support ticket and talk to someone on our team you can do that here too go ahead and follow the prompts to send a message and all your messages will stay here in perpetuity so that you can refer back to them all right a few other things on our dashboard here is my hamburger menu and this is how I access all of the features I have access to as a web admin over here I can click to to uh go follow to my homepage now if your site's not live this won't work it because your domain's not live yet but once it goes live clicking there will take you over to your homepage I want to go ahead and take a quick moment to do a homepage scan to identify the elements that I have here on my demo site now know to Ed Leo sites are the same so your site and my site are not going to have the same elements in the same order however I want to create some shared language with the elements that we do have have here on our site because all features are edited in the exact same way here in our dashboard so it's just a matter of identifying what features in what order we have on our home screen so that we can go ahead and identify them and come to the dashboard and make edits as needed to make sure that we have all of the most up-to-date and most engaging content on our website so here at the very top I've got a navigation menu I've got 2 top-level items to my site navigation menu with um some drop-downs taking me to different pages and features we are going to go ahead and take a look at editing your site navigation menu we'll also take a look at your homepage media here I've got a shuffle um so I've got a Photoshop with shuffles rotating through you may have a featured video here instead of a homepage Shuffle we'll take a look at how you can swap out your media in both cases scrolling a little bit farther down I've got a group of links yours might even say something like quick links we're going to be able to add and edit these links in our link feature continuing on down I have a spotlight message we are going to be able to edit this in our Spotlight message tool I'm going to be able to edit the title The text the image and even um the ability to have this read more button I can take it off put it on and choose that when folks follow that read more button if I have it on where it's going to take them currently this is set to a spotlight message page that gives us more information on this Spotlight message but we're going to have a few choices to um enhance discoverability and um be able to situate the perfect link here in our Spotlight message now what might you use Spotlight messages for my messages are great for um welcome messages from your principal for highlighting the mission and vision or about us of your of your school we can even link our mission and vision or about us page in that case um we can have uh student spotlights employees spotlights programmatic spotlights because again we can swap out our our Spotlight message over in our dashboard throughout the year um to highlight the um most relevant content for that time of year here and this really um um attention-grabbing part of our website now scrolling further down here I've got what we call an at a glance um stats if you have a a stat spreadsheet uh sheet like this a stats Carousel like this or scrolling further down maybe you've got a um Carousel of different schools that your graduates were accepted to these are elements that are hardcoded when elements are hardcoded what I mean to say is we are not going to find them over here in the dashboard to edit so if we want to edit these stats let's say um our student to teacher ratio has gone down to 15 to 1 that's huge we want to make sure that is displayed on your website simply reach out to tech support um here via the intercom tool or send an email to client success at edlio.com um with the request to swap out that information and we'll get that changed for you you likely have um just a few hard-coded elements if any on your page um that um allows your homepage to be fully accessible um so you don't have the access to edit this particular feature but again just reach out to us and we'd be happy to change that for you scrolling further down I've got another Spotlight message this time highlighting a video and we're going to be able to see where in our media we can swap out this featured video as well as of course edit all of the text of our Spotlight message and our read more button we have a news announcements Carousel that we allows us to post news to our homepage as well as a calendar Carousel here and those can both be edited in plan under calendars and news and alerts finally on your footer you've likely got a few different pieces of information your contact information which can be found in Settings under contact should you need to edit this as well as some links I have some footer links and some social media links that we're going to be able to edit in the links feature along with those links that we identified at the very top here of our or nearly very top of our homepage finally if you have this edlio login button at the bottom you and your staff um can rest assured that anywhere on your homepage you'll be able to scroll down any on your website you'll be able to scroll down and click login and be brought over to your app dashboard um so it's great to go ahead and bookmark your app dashboard URL um but you can always get there by scrolling down clicking at the login and using your credentials to log in all right so with that let's go ahead and get started um let's first look at editing our homepage media so if we have a homepage Shuffle or a featured video we are going to be able to keep our content fresh let's first look at a homepage Shuffle I'm going to go hamburger menu media and Shuffles here I'm going to see the amount of Shuffle categories that I'm able to edit on my homepage this is going to depend on your homepage design in my particular case my site has a redesign and we've undergone a redesign so I can see these shuffles um no longer course respond to my homepage and they've been renamed as such to remind me that I don't have to focus on these you can always rename your Shuffle categories clicking your pencil here to make those as clear as possible for you as a web admin so in my case I just got that shuffle at the top here now if you have images behind maybe your quick links or behind 1 of your carousels you may see that shuffle category here too so you're going to want to play around and I uh map up which Shuffles appear where on your homepage again in my case I've just got my main Shuffle so I'm going to go ahead and click to open and now I'm going to be able to edit if I want to add new photos to my home Shuffle I'm going to come up to upload media and upload a photo from my computer or cloud service any of these file types are accepted I want to pay close attention to my Shuffle dimensions and make sure to add high resolution photos now high resolution photos doesn't necessarily need large photos in fact if all of the photos in our Shuffle are 15 megabytes each our homepage is going to load pretty slow for folks with slower internet connections so something to be aware of but we definitely want high res solution photos since this is the first thing that folks see if we have that photoshop at the top of our homepage now we can have those photos appear in numerical order I can drag and drop so when folks come to site they're going to display 123 or I can have them display in a random order so every time folks come to my website a new photo uploads displays now I can come to slide layout and I want to do a 2 things 1 is I want to make sure I have sufficient alt text if you haven't gone into your dashboard yet this is the first time that you're really playing around you may see those orange frames around photos telling you alt text is missing all text is something that we go into in more detail in the accessibility study hall but it's what folks who are using screen readers to engage with your website um uh the information that they get for these images that being shared so the best practice is to give a 2 to 8 word description of what is going on in the image um here in in our shuffles we're going to click Alt and this is where we'll go ahead um and put that all text so if we're generating it ourselves let's go ahead and click alt again we might say something like uh kid looking through a camera now with link to sign up for tours that's because if you have a link on your images um that is totally possible here in your shuffles I can go ahead and make this image clickable I can also add a caption to my photo and add a hyperlink to that caption now whether or not the caption um is something that is going to look good with your homepage design is something that you want to look at you always want whenever you're making changes to keep your homepage design in mind but those are some different ways to add captions and links and if you do add a link to the image you want to make sure that the function of that link is in the alt text let's check out another example I can come here and click on and see a 2 to 8 word description of the information that's being shared in the image voila my photos are accessible and I'm good to go if a photo is purely decorative you can go ahead um and give a shorter description that says um even something as simple as 2 quotation marks um but if you have our edl edlio AI accessibility tool turned on you don't even have to worry about um thinking how am I going to describe what's going on in this photo we can simply generate alt text with edlio AI we can edit that as we see fit and go ahead and Save now that's um how we can go ahead and give captions and make sure our images are accessible now we can control the behavior of our photo Shuffle down here at slide transitions so if I scroll down I can go ahead and edit how long each photo is displaying on the screen if I want to increase or decrease that time what the transition behavior of the slide is and if I want to give folks the ability to go ahead and uh flip through the pictures and if I do how I want to give that control to them or I give them known application control and they wait those 3 seconds to see the next image you can go ahead and view your changes on your live site and save when you are happy and that is how you edit your Photoshop now let's check out videos I'm going to go to my hamburger menu media and videos and audio now remember in my case I have a featured video in 1 of my homepage um uh Spotlight messages if you have a featured video on your homepage you're going to be able to identify which video is being pulled onto your homepage in the status column here I'm going to look for the video that has the blue featured star if I want to swap out which video is featured I'm simply going to unselect the current featured video it's going to reload for me and then I'm going to go ahead and scroll down and uh click my new featured desired video so now my edlio back to school is going to be uh displaying on my homepage now what if we want to add a new video you may add a new video because you have a featured video on your page or because you want to have this video in your video gallery we want to pull it into a news later we want to pull it onto Pages we can do all sorts of things with the videos from our video gallery um we're going to be able able to upload a new video coming to the top right and clicking new video and we can upload from our computer or embed from the web if we're uploading from our computer we have all sorts of built-in accessibility tools to your edlio video tool you're going to go ahead and upload the video from your device we have all of these accepted file types you can upload as many videos as you want and need each up to 2 gigs each so that's at least 2 hours of high quality um video content so there are a lot of uh you know a lot of video content that you can fit here in our video tool now you're going to go ahead and give that video a title and an optional description to display on the screen just like with our images we need to give our visual media alt text here in the case of videos alt text is a very brief let's say 1 sentence um overview of the video's content you're going to go ahead and give that overview here and that's all you need to do for accessibility because you are at Leo video tool has um all sorts of built-in accessibility settings you're just going to confirm the video's original language and it's going to go ahead and um generate closed captioning and a transcript for you it reminds you that is going to take about an hour so go ahead and save put a timer on for about an hour you can come back and uh double check your um your closed captions and transcripts have generated correctly go ahead and check out our accessibility study hall for more details on how to do this and why this is important and then you'll be able to go ahead and pull that video as the featured video onto your homepage or into other areas of your CMS and those are your videos and audio now let's go ahead and look at situating links on our homepage um so we have a few resources to um help folks find our most important pages and features across our CMS our number 1 um uh resource here is going to be our site navigation feature so we can situate our most important and key pages and features and links here in our site navigation menu the other feature that you want to lean on to increase discoverability of your most important Pages features and links is your links feature so I can make sure that I'm highlighting important links for this time of year for example here on these links in the main part of my homepage page or on my footer that is going to follow folks no matter where they are in my site with important links for my social medias for our schools or districts or maybe for some of those um really important uh Pol policies that need to be easily accessible on our website like a website accessibility policy and non-discrimination policy so on and so forth we're going to go ahead and be able to situate those links on our um sites uh via let's first look at our site navigation menu so we're going to come to our hamburger menu down to site management and up to site navigation all right and now we see that site navigation menu remember I have 2 top-level items here that each have drop-down menus we see that accordion out and I can go ahead and edit any of those items how can I edit those items well I'm simply going to click the item that I want to edit I can go ahead and edit the text that displays maybe I want this to say about us instead of about and edit the destination of where it's taking folks now in my example for about my first top level item when I click about here we can see it just opens and closes the drop-down menu it doesn't take me anywhere that's because about is set to container that um as it says doesn't have any links will not be clickable it just creates um that drop-down menu but maybe I want to go ahead and um really economize all of the links in my site navigation menu I want to go ahead and Pare down my site navigation menu as much as possible in my case I definitely want to do that it's getting a little bit long um it uh is getting a little bit um too much clutter maybe it's difficult to navigate on most so we want to go ahead um and be really strategic with the pages and features that we're linking here to our site navigation menu I can go ahead and use the about us top level item as a clickable item if I want I can have clicking about us take folks to a section or page from my page management all thing Pages we go into in that intro to Pages study hall so if you have any questions on pages um definitely sign up uh or 1 of those um internet Pages study halls and we can create a lovely about us page and then go ahead and select that page here I can just search through all the pages I have and I can take folks to our about us section when they click about us now taking folks to a section will always open to the first page in that section um so effectively taking folks when they click about us to our About Us section will open to our teachers and administrators page I can also have clicking about us take folks to a URL if I'm taking folks within my website maybe I want to share a um feature here I can go ahead and drop the URL for that feature um drop the URL um for that particular link or maybe I'm taking them outside my website um we want to go ahead and take them to a resource um from the state uh so on and so forth I want to go ahead in that case and have the link open as a new tab so when folks click about us and are taken outside my website they don't lose the table with my website the other thing that I want to do when I take folks to an outside user route URL is give the secure link prefix HTT TPS s stands for secure I can also upload a file such that when folks click about us it uploads that file type in a new tab go ahead and keep that setting as such you can upload any file type from your computer or cloud service now you're going to want to make sure that that is an accessible file especially if we're thinking about PDFs um but if it is a PDF then it's going to go ahead when cloaks click about us it's going to open that PDF a new tab finally I can go ahead and select a feature page we can think of basically everything in the hamburger menu here as features or feature page so I can take folks for example to 1 of my calendars to my alumni director to my staff directory um to a form maybe we have a contact us form a donation form we have a photo album Maybe to our video gallery we just added lovely videos to so on and so forth all of the items within the drop-down menu of uh this about a section we can go ahead and edit in the exact same way so I can go ahead and simply click the item edit the text as I would like and edit that destination anytime I see the Domino across the CMS I'm going to go ahead and be able to reorder items so I can drag items lower in my About Us section maybe I want to drag this all the way down to a different section so on and so forth and I can also um edit existing items 3 dots across the CMS always lets you edit so I can come um and edit the link I edit the page itself so if I want to edit my 10th grade page this will take me directly into page management to do that um public URL will always take me to the URL um to view uh the you know the public view the public facing View of this page I can also make this a sub item maybe I want to Nest 10th grade under music choir tour now do this sparingly for accessibility reasons but it is an option for you and finally I can delete keep this off my site navigation menu now important if I delete my 10th grade page off my site navigation menu I'm not deleting all the hard work we've done in making a beautiful 10th grade team I just thought you know what our site navigation menu is getting a little too long let's go ahead and clean it up I'm going to delete the 10th page and situate that elsewhere um in my sight be more strategic so that again I don't have too long of a site navigation menu um that Folk did a little lost in wet resources I'm sharing um there's clutter it it starts to uh you know clutter my sights design in fact if we scroll all the way down you can see our Pro tip that we um go ahead and remind you to keep each top-level navigation item 5 to 8 items exactly for that reason now a great resource to help you do that is the ability all the way at the bottom here to create a new top-level item so I can go ahead and create a top level item in my case because remember I just have 2 I can call that whatever I would like I can make it clickable if I want let's say I want to take folks um to our calendar here and then I can start adding item um under that third top level item or simply um relocate other items from other sections now it reminds me all my changes have not been saved yet let's go ahead and pull that supply list so I want to go ahead and make sure to save my changes if I would like to see those on my page um so let's go ahead and Save and check look at our new third um top level item that we made clickable here now before you do that let's go ahead and look at our links so again our links are your other resource to make sure that you're most important key p features and links are situated strategically across your site you're going to find links under page management and links all right and the first thing we want to pay attention to here under links are our different topics when we click a topic and we see this uh Banner this uh badge used in site design um that means we're going to be able to find those linked topics somewhere on our homepage we've already identified those 3 topics and so here they are now we can go ahead and uh create new links by coming to add a link let's say we want to add it to that main um homepage quicklinks topics in that main part of our homepage here I'm going to go ahead and add a link I'm going to drop a title I'm going to drop my full link if I'm taking folks outside of my website remember that secure link prefix and I may want to give an icon that's going to depend on um which link topic and how it's designed for example I'm definitely want to give an icon because all my other links in this section have these lovely icons here so I want that Symmetry and parody and I'm going to go ahead and click an icon versus if I go down to my footer um here my uh links uh that have FAFSA easy Mass we don't have any um icon that displays here so I might not worry about pulling in an icon I might only put an pull in an on if I want to use these links also as buttons on pages again go to that intro to Pages study hall so you can learn a little bit about how you can use links as reusable menus on pages and in that case the icons um can be a really nice touch but if we just have these here on my homepage I don't have to worry about it because as we can see that icon is not displaying here versus in contrast our social media links um we don't even see the title it's the icons that we see so the icons are really important here again so depending on what your category what your um link topic uh is how it displays will go ahead and select an icon we can go ahead and search our image Library find the icon that is going to um work the best for us and we'll go ahead and save our link now we have a fifth link here and we'll go ahead and see how that works um I want to scroll down to social media and just point out we definitely want to add those icons here and I also want to point out um this symbol right here this means that this link is unpublished and precisely we do not see our YouTube on our social media links unplugging is a great option um to go ahead and pull a link um or any piece of content off of your website without fully deleting it so we um can go ahead and add a particular link and say you know what we're not ready to share that yet I'm going to go 3 dots and unpublish and now my LinkedIn is also pulled off of my site so in this case only my Twitter Facebook and Instagram are now going to be visible but then when we're ready to go ahead and launch our LinkedIn or launched our YouTube we can come to the 3 dotts and republish these pulling these live on our site let's go ahead and refresh our screen to see our changes to our site navigation menu and our links all right so with our site navigation menu here is our third top level item so we can see that gives us lots of space to start to move over resources and make our drop-down menus um more even in terms the amount of links and we can also see that uh the difference in how a clickable top level item looks versus a uh container scrolling down we can see that fifth link we've added in the main quicklink part of our uh page here now we always again want to keep our site's design in mind um now we've seen that these quick links are organized in groups of 4 so I may consider adding 8 quick links here or I might want to keep that um you know original site design with my 4 Quick links and go ahead and use that unpublished item to go ahead and unpublish 1 of the links that may be um less uh you know less top of mind at this point in the school year wherever we are so that again we're maintaining our site's design and symmetry here with our links and finally scrolling all the way down here I can see um all of my social media had gone ahead and republished YouTube and Instagram so again that is the Strategic use of your unpublished um just to close the loop on the suggestion I could say we want to add Parent Portal let's go ahead and pull off teacher pages for the moment um so that we have that uh design of the group of 4 links and later when we want to highlight teacher pages we can go ahead and swap out which of those 4 links are being highlighted so again just some suggestions here but you always always want to keep your um sites design in mind and if you have any questions about your site's design or you want to consider a redesign just to reach out to client success at edlio.com and we'd be happy to discuss options all right um so that is um your main uh uh items for locating links now let's go ahead and look at those Spotlight messages Spotlight messages are kind of a nice mix of sharing media information and links all the things that we um starting to talk about today we're going to be able to edit these to Spotlight messages over here in our hamburger menu announced on website and Spotlight messages now we can see that we've swapped out the featured video using our video tool we're going be able to swap out the text the the link um that link button right there and the um photo if you have photos in the spotlight message tool we're going to Simply want to click on the spotlight message that we want to edit let's look at our Mass communication Spotlight message all right so if we want to edit any of the text of our Spotlight message we're going to Simply click so if I want to edit the title that displays right here I can click the pencil in the um title bar if I want to edit any of the text in the body I'm going to be able to do that I have some basic text formatting so you can see I can go ahead and use bold um I can add hyperlinks I can add if you're familiar with HTML you can go ahead and play around um with the code there but I'm more simple um um you know message text here if I want to swap out that photo that's pulling onto my homepage I'm going to simply delete this upload a new photo and make sure to give that alt text if this is the first time that you're really getting into your dashboard I would go ahead and just every time you see alt text go ahead and click and because you might have some placeholder alt text descriptions um that aren't quite sufficient this 1 we're going to go ahead and um um fix this alt text description to um give it a little bit more description have it hit that 2 to 8 words uh describing what exactly is happening in this image so again make a note to do an audit of all the alt text on your images to make sure that your homepage is accessible again we get into accessibility tips in the accessibility study hall but the only thing you really need to worry about when it comes to your homepage your homepage was designed with accessibility in mind is the alt text for the media on your page as well as uh doing your best to have a um simple uh names with clear functions in your site navigation menu so that folks know what where each item is going to take them now back to Spotlight messages um we notice that with mass communication um we start to read some of the key features and then it gets cut off and it tells us we can please read more and it takes us to that Spotlight message page we looked at a little bit earlier with all of the text of our Spotlight message and any additional files that we add so that is the benefit of including a read more link if you have a spotlight message that has a lot of text that goes beyond what your Spotlight message is able to display on your homepage you can go ahead and include that read more link simply by making sure that this include read more link button is clicked and then we can go ahead and edit what that button says read more about mass communication and we can take them to our Spotlight message page where we have all sorts of um at key features outlined about mass communications and some additional files that folks can go ahead and click to uh to check out if I want to add more files to display on the spotlight message page I can go ahead and select them for my computer or cloud service these additional files only show up on the spotlight message page not the homepage itself now my other option from a spotlight message page is to drop a custom link so maybe this I'm using the spotlight message as a welcome message from my principal um and we've also recorded the welcome message as a video we went ahead and uploaded it to our edl Gallery we got those um accessibility features closed captioning transcripts sorry principal's message is um good to go ahead and be reached by everyone in their school community no matter in our school community no matter how they're joining our website instead of taking folks to a spotlight message page I can grab the URL for that video and drop it here and now when folks click my descriptive link I can say listen to our principals message and take folks to that video or maybe I made an about us page um and I've gone ahead and used my Spotlight message to um Scituate in about us message on our homepage when folks want to read more about history about our mission our vision while I put that all on our lovely about us page in our Pages tool I can grab that URL and drop it here the the possibilities are endless because we can put any link that we can think of here if we're taking folks outside of our website we'll want to go ahead and click open as a new tab and any changes we want to go ahead and click save when we are done now our mission Spotlight message is edited the exact same way but of course in this case we don't have a featured photo because a featured video is being pulled here um you can go ahead and explore the different Spotlight messages on your homepage if you have a spotlight message that's being used for your motto you might notice something different something similar excuse me where um you don't have a photo being pulled to your homepage it's just the text just go ahead and play around here and see what is possible always keeping your site's design in mind with that let's go ahead and uh round out our session today by looking at our 2 carousel got our news and ments Carousel and our calendar Carousel here both of these of course are edited in our um uh dashboard let's go ahead first and check at our school events so here I can see that my main school calendar um which is called school events polls onto my homepage here and highlights a particular amount of items and when I click show all events I'm not only going to see all the events in that particular calendar but I'm going to see any additional calendar that I have added here as well so this allows me to share key events on my homepage while also allowing parents to go ahead and sign up for the additional calendars that are relevant to them and their students they can come here and hit subscribe pull those events onto their own Al so on and so forth we're going to be able to link calendars or uh create events by going to our hamburger menu plan and calendars all right so when we're here um in calendars I'm going to see personal versus school this is a bifurcation you're going to see often in the dashboard personal always refers to personal paid um personal accounts um that is for creating personal Pages that's what we like to call teacher pages um all accounts come with personal pages if you are interested in learning what the personal page AK teacher page feature can uh offer to the teachers at your building um go ahead and check out the resources in our help center or come to a teacher page study hall to go ahead head um and check out those features now what um we're going to focus on today is our schoolwide calendar because that's of course what is pulling here to our homepage now we've got a few different ways to to create events on our calendar 1 is to add our events manually so um if we don't have an iCal we want to go ahead and upload our events really simple we're going to come and add event now I can see here all of the calendars that I have you may just have your 1 Calendar that pulls onto the homepage if that's the case you won't have a drop-down menu or you might want to create um some of these secondary calendars and I'll show you how to do You're simply going to select the calendar that you want the event to be added to I want it to be added to my homepage so I'm going to leave it right there and I'm going to click add event and now I'm going to go ahead and add um uh my calendar maybe I want this to post both to my homepage as well as to my Athletics calendar my Athletics calendar is going to push onto my Athletics page a really awesome feature that we go into in the intro to Pages study hall so I'm going to go ahead and select the calendars that I want this event to be tagged to and then I'm going to add some basic information as we can see on the homepage the date the name of the event the time and the optional location will all display so let's go ahead and drop those uh informations all right so I have my event title my event date and time maybe it's an all day event like our Field Day and The Time is not relevant picture day so on and so forth I can go ahead and remove those hours or drop them in here if the event repeats I'm going to go ahead and click that and um go ahead and set its repetition uh every week on Wednesday every year in May so on and so forth if there's a location I can put that again it's optional there's also optional details as well as link maybe I made a form to go ahead and sign up for our field day I can go ahead and just drop this form here um and folks can go ahead and access that link and sign up so on and so forth if I want to attach any files or pictures I'm going to be able to choose those here I'm going to be able to access to add as many files and pictures as I need now a quick note is that it adds a tip that if you add a photo it will display on the homepage now this depends on your homepage design in my case I don't have homepage pictures um for events on my homepage however I still added a picture and I'm going to show you where it would show up now again it asks us for that missing alt text very important I'm going to go ahead and click all and give that 2 to 8 word description and I'm going to go ahead and save my event when I done now when I create events manually here in the study hall I'm going to be able to see this is the event that I've just saved it gives me this nice green badge I can go ahead and click the event if I want to edit and of course I can click delete if I want to delete now if you already have an IAL created on something like Google Calendar Office 365 Etc you can link that calendar skipping having to duplicate your efforts and add events simply by going to settings here now you can also access settings by going to the hamburger menu site management and settings and down to calendars and I can uh connect an iCal integration right here so I'm simply going to select the calendar that I want to connect each calendar can have 1 iCal integration if I want to add additional calendars I want to add an Athletics calendar a summer school calendar a PTA calendar I'm going to be able to go ahead and do that right here giving the calendar a name you're going to notice that your zero category calendar that corresponds to the calendar that's on your homepage our school events calendar down here and we even see the name on your homepage in most cases so that makes it really clear for us um again I can add calendars and then connect Google or Office 365 um to each of those calendars 1 per calendar just simply click the the iCal integration use your SSO to sign in and that creates a 1-way communication feed such that all events created on Google Office 365 edited created or deleted are going to be automatically reflected on your uh your homepage all right so let's go ahead and check out um what our event looks like so here's our field day I have the date the uh title the location it's an all day event so the time is simply removed and if I want to see those details I want to see the picture I can go ahead and click on that event and see all of that I can go ahead and copy it to Google Calendar or to my Apple iCal if I have an iPhone um have that just ready to save on my phone it also can see that the event description if I am checking out all the events and I'm you know what I just want to see everything going on in May Show all events here we go if I click on my event then I see those details here and that is your calendar feature now let's go ahead and check out news and events we're going to come to our hamburger menu announced on website and news and alerts similarly 2 calendars we can have multiple news Kate categories the difference that I want to point out here is that when I'm looking um at the news on my homepage very similarly to calendars that very first news category that zero Library news and announcements those are the news items that are pulling onto my homepage here but the difference is when I go to show all news I'm only looking at the news from this news and announcements category now I just want to bring that up as you can create additional categories in your settings for news but you're going to need to situate those categories somewhere on your website now you can add um those News 2 particular pages so I can create an Athletics page and add my Athletics news to that page um can be really compelling that way my Athletics news doesn't take uh you know over all of that really precious homepage real estate um but I can share all the Athletics news that I want again while having a nice balance of what's being uh published on my homepage or I can simply grab that news category grab that link and situate that link wherever I want on my site navigation menu as a link as a hyperlink as a homepage widget all different ways to situate links right so now let's back up and talk about news more generally but I just wanted to explain a little bit about Hobo's news categories work when we are focusing on publishing news to our homepage um Carousel we don't have to worry anything about creating or navigating additional categories we always want to publish to this first category and that category is going to be named exactly what uh that news category is called here on your homepage making it really easy for you so let's go ahead and add news now I'm going to go ahead and add um some compelling headline short summary and featured image because that's exactly what polls onto my homepage I've got a headline a short summary and a featured image so I'm going to want to make sure to add that um information in a clear and intention grabbing way always want to make sure to add a featured image as it really goes a long way in grabbing folks attention to your um news and announcement stories down here so let's go ahead and start to build our news story I'm going to go ahead and add my headline I'm gonna add my short summary if I want to pull um emojis from my phone or my tablet the CMS is going to recognize those and then I'm going to choose what type of news story I'm creating what do I mean by that well when we click a new item it can take us 1 of 3 places it can take us to a Content box which is basically a URL all for this news article so if I don't have any content already created for this news article um here I can go ahead and create a page situating everything I need folks to know that's what we'll go ahead and create today um because we have all the options here we can add hyperlinks we can add files media so on and so forth but let's say I already have a file for our talent show my file I made sure was accessible I made sure um is uh in the languages that my school community um speaks so on and so forth then I don't need to reinvent the wheel and create a Content page necessarily I can just link that file here and when folks click on the headline of the news story that file will be opened in a new tab same logic with page maybe I made a forum for everything to sign up for the spring talent show I've added all of the information folks need to know there again I don't need to copy and paste everything into the content box I can simply drop the URL for that page here now in our case we're going to make a Content box so let's go over and drop our text in I can go ahead and format this text I have some basic text formatting so on and so forth maybe I want to add a hyperlink I've got a link to sign up I can go ahead and click that hyperlink option and drop my form to sign up now my 3 dots are going to give me some additional options including adding a table sourcing code inserting an image or embedding a video when I'm inserting any type of media or table I'm going to Simply have my cursor where I want that media to populate and then I'm going to go ahead and click either of these I can upload an image by uploading an image here from my computer I'm going to give that image alt text I'm going to go ahead and save it I can resize it with my cursor and even make that image clickable um that's great because then image um is situated right in your content box between the text exactly where you want it um to be located to contextualize that image I can also embed a video clicking my little play button here all I'm going to do is pull the UR RL of a video whether that's from my edio video gallery whether that's from YouTube Vimeo so on and so forth I simply pull the URL of the video I don't need to know how to find the embed code because it finds it for me does all the work for me all I need to do is save and voila my video is embedded here in my news story now a few extra options um if you're new uh is coming from an outside Source let's say a local newspaper wrote about your school we can go ahead and Source um that maybe uh the local newspaper wrote about your um school's Athletics programs a particular team we can go ahead and Link the page up here to that news story and then come down and source that news story making it really easy for us to share that type of content we can also add videos from our video gallery this is going to pull those videos above or below our new story and I can choose above or below right down here here's where I can attach files or photos and it reminds me this is where my featured photo comes from and we definitely want to make sure to add featured photos you can pull free stock stock photos from sites like unsplash.com or create photos for free on canva you'll notice any file type is accepted so we'll go ahead and select from our computer or cloud service our featured photo as well as any other content that we want to add to this new story all right so I'm going to go ahead and pull multiple photos uploading those 1 by 1 I've created a gif on canva to give some Dynamics 2 um my homepage um uh featured photo there I want to go ahead and add my um student handbook to remind my students um what they need to do in order to um uh make sure that they're Meeting those requirements in order to perform in the talent show whatever the case may be I can go ahead and add um any files here now let's go ahead and give our alt text again 2 to 8 words we'll go ahead and Save clicking save are missing alt text um goes ahead and is resolved now for my gift you can notice I have burnt in text meaning I have texts showing up in this image I'm going to want that text description to be in um the alt text so that again folks who are using screen readers have access to what is being communicated in this image in this case we have um some written communication so let's go ahead and bring that over into the alt text all right wonderful our all text is added now we can select which photo we want to be featured on our homepage by simply selecting it the blue frame is now around it and we are ready to go we can go ahead and publish this news now we can also publish it in the future helping us get ahead of our work let's say we want to go ahead and um get as much news published for the summer as possible so that we only have to go ahead and publish um news that comes up at the last minute um we've gone ahead and made our summer super easy for ourselves we want to get ahead of the new school year so on and so forth we can go ahead and do that we can also as far as publishing in the future we can also backdate now if we do back backdate in article we're still going to have to drag it into the chronological order because it's going to publish still um this news story on the top of our news feed but would publish it with that back date now I can also have this news story off my homepage display on a particular date this is really helpful let's say um our talent show is happening um next weekend so the end of next weekend I no longer want this on my homepage now this news is not going to be in published it will still be visible when I go to the news page but it's just not taking up that really valuable homepage real estate because it's no longer relevant we want all of our homepage news to be news that's coming up in the future so we can go ahead and set it and forget it that news once it's uh gone and passed can go ahead and simply roll off our homepage display now if you have the accessibility tool on you can go ahead and review the accessibility report by saving a draft of your news and letting Ed leoaai AI making sure that this new story is ADA Compliant we have some accessibility issues and it's going to tell us what they are we go into all of these issues issues and what they mean in our accessibility study hall um we want to go ahead and just use the edlio AI um to go ahead and make our lives as easy as possible so let's go ahead and just fix automat medically it's going to take a minute and go ahead and fix those issues and allow us to publish a um news story that we know is going to be reachable by our entire School community and um meet 88 standards all right and now it's successfully fixed all our accessibility issues that gives me a summary of those fixes I can rerun the report if I want to um be doubly sure and then I'm going to go ahead and publish my news story now you can do many additional things with your news you can create a homepage alert you can send the news via email you can push the news um to your social medias your Facebook Instagram and or Twitter you can send a newsletter all really awesome features that you can jump into a live at Leo study hall um to ask about to learn or you can explore in our help center help. or via our intercom tool here we want to go ahead um and check out what our news story looks like on our homepage so let's go ahead and scroll down to our news and announcements and here is our news and announcements now um depending on your site's design your featured video might show up in place of that featured photo so you can go ahead and play around in the case that you want a video to show up on your news Carousel adds a really Dynamic element we have that showing up here or our featured image now we've got our headline our short summary and when I click that headline it takes me to my content page with all of of my content here my file at the bottom my hyperlink that video so on and so forth now back in my dashboard if I am really wanting able to see this news story I might create a homepage alert so that that creates a pop-up for whenever people come into my site they're going to see my homepage alert if I'm you know not sure if they're going to scroll all the way down to my news Carousel this is a great option if I need to edit that news story or any of the ways to announce that news we just looked at after the fact I can come to news and alerts come to my 3 dots edit the news story um come to announce and see those options once more and I can also use the unpublished function let's say um we are going to have the same talent show in the fall or next year um no this is no longer relevant or for example are back to school event all right back to school event has passed we're already in Fall let's say let's go ahead and unpublish this because it's no longer relevant information but now next year we're going to be able to come to view unpublished news edit 2025 to 20 26 um and go ahead and repurpose this same news story because when we go ahead and publish it it publishes to the top of my published news now that's all we have for today is recorded session again I want to encourage you to sign up for upcoming live study hall sessions where you
