hello and welcome to this edlio study hall intro to Pages my name is Taylor a trainer here with edlio and I'll be leading you through today's recorded session this session of course is recorded for your convenience but if you need any more assistance please always feel free to reach out to us at client success at edlio.com you can also get help in the dashboard directly via the intercom tool and I'm going to show you when we jump into the dashboard how to access that you can also come to any live study hall sessions these are hour-long sessions based on your questions and interactions so come and bring any questions and Curiosities you have to the session that most matches the feature that you want to learn about most matches your need um and we'd be happy to help answer all your questions there now for today's session we are focusing on mastering the pages of your school website to make your CMS Shine by the end of this training you will be able to create engaging Pages where you can showcase and information an attention grabbing pages that showcase your school I'm going to show you how to share content seamless seamlessly from text to images to videos to files to links and I'm going to show you how to organize all those pages efficiently explain a little bit about how our page management system works and how you can get those those pages connected to your site navigation menu so with that let's go ahead and start at the top with what our page manager tool is when you go into page management there are 2 types of pages you will find you will see personal pages and these we refer to as teacher pages all accounts whether you're a web admin or simply a standard user with teacher pages now how you build a teacher page is very similar to how I'm going to show you we how we can build Pages for your website as admin however teacher pages come with a few additional features that are useful for classroom teachers such as linking your classes including Google Classroom um creating uh posts like a mini blog space um having subscribers so that that teacher can send um newsletters to their classroom in the same way that you can send news letters as a web admin now we're going to be focusing today on category pages but if you are curious about teacher pages you can go ahead and check out the links in this deck to see some examples of teacher pages and what is possible and come join us on a teacher page study hall so you can learn more info tips and best practices you can of course feel free to share that um link or pre-recorded session with your teachers as well now today we are going to be focusing on category Pages while personal pages are linked to the individual account category pages are what we like to call the filing cabinet behind our CMS so all the pages beyond our homepage um that we can create edit for our website information um website admin and accounts designated by website admin um can go ahead and create access and edit those category Pages now if you have any questions about out web admin accounts versus teacher accounts I would recommend you um come to our intro to user management study hall where we go into all of the Account Details let's go ahead and jump into our dashboard and see a little bit more what I mean about this idea of category Pages as of filing cabinet so let's go ahead and access our Pages I'm going to come up to the hamburger menu in the top left corner here I'm going to come down to page management and I'm going to open my pages so here I'm in my category pages and again this is um we like to at edlio use the metaphor that this is the filing cabinet behind beyond your um website behind your website and so we have 6 drawers up to 6 drawers and my filing cabinet I can go ahead and open 1 of those drawers those are my categories and I see all my sections my sections are like my filing folders I can have as many as I want and in each section I can have as many pages as I want whenever I see this symbol here that means that these section or the page is linked in the site navigation menu that is really helpful because let's say let's open this section that has 6 pages and I can see only the admissions page is linked in the site navigation menu now that can be a really helpful best practice just because I don't have to make my site navigation menu really long adding my mission and vision my staff directory my photo album so on and so forth I can simply link the kind of most common denominator page the most sap actor page and let folks via the section menu discover the other pages in this section now at the end of the training today we will uh take our newly created page and we'll go ahead and Link it to the site navigation menu so you can see how you can do that but for more best practices on the site navigation menu uh come out to our intro to edlio CMS study hall or take a look at a 1 of those pre-recorded sessions for more details on adding to your site navigation menu all right so let's go back out to our category and start from the top by adding a new section so we're going to create a new section that has nothing in it and it's not yet linked to the site navigation menu I'm going to call this section training now in this section I can see it is blank I can start adding pages I can add a blank page I can link to another page or I can add these feature Pages we'll go ahead and look at all of those today let's go ahead and first start with a blank page now the first thing that I'm going to want to do when I create my page is choose my page layout choosing your page layout is something that can be set in the settings that I will show you at the end of today's session so that your layout always opens the same and you'll be able to edit that but that's going to be helpful for folks to anticipate is a section and you're going to be on the left hand side on the right hand side so on and so forth let's look at a few different page examples just so you can have an idea of how you might reverse engineer some of the page designs whether you want a more simple page or a Dynamic uh full of content page for a more simple page let's go ahead and check out this simple about this um simple school history page here we have some text I have a photo Shuffle more text a button to follow to a link and another Photoshop so pretty simple right we we can create Pages like this with just a basic layout there's no site navigation menu um we just have some basic information or we can create a more um Dynamic page with lots of different information here we've got our hero page layout that allows us to put a um full width image at the top we could even have multiple images in this area and have a Photoshop in place of the static image here announcing my um page title now scrolling down I can see 2 different options for Section menus I've got my side section menu here and I've got my section menu across the top so when you choose a hero image layout you can choose which section menus work best for your website now just like the other page I've got pictures and text but I've also got um my uh I'm have an Athletics page here right I'm linking my Athletics calendar directly to the page my Athletics news directly to the page so every time something posts on that Athletics news category or in my Athletics calendar it's going to be automatically reflected here on my Athletics page page now just like the other page I have some buttons and I also have stack blocks allowing me to highlight who is in charge of the program described on this page um here are our athletic directors I can go and email the coaches directly from the page so a lot of really interesting um content here that we will learn to make together including of course our Photoshop and embedding PDFs directly on the page as well as util izing collapsible sections to make our Pages um as easy to navigate as possible let's go ahead um and choose our hero image layout so we can see some of those options um that we saw on that Athletics page example I'm going to choose to leave my uh section menu here on the right hand side let's say I'm going to go ahead and change all my pages so that the section menu is always anticipated on the right hand side when we get to settings I'm going to show you how you're going to be able to do that in 1 Fell Swoop now let's go ahead and give our page a title we want to give a clear simple descriptive title to the page and now we can start adding content I'm going to go up top and add a photo page block so I can have that full side to decide image that full screen image at the top of my page I'm going to upload any of these file types from my computer or cloud service and as soon as my image is uploaded I'm going to need to alt text alt text is a very important component of accessibility um we get more into the details um rationale and best practices for accessibility in the accessibility webinar but the pro tip is to make sure your accessibility settings are turned on um to ask you for this alt text so that you make sure every time you add media you have that really important alt text and the best practice is simply 2 to 8 words describing what's happening in this image no more than 10 words um is necessary student writing in Notebook in class um can describe this image here now if we kept uploading photos then um automat medically we would have this section be a Photoshop how do I know that well I can come check my settings wheel and I can see that the layout is set to rotate so as soon as there's more than 1 Photo it's going to go ahead and rotate between those we're also going to want to make sure that in that settings wheel we have full width selected so that we get that full side to side look of our um example page here all right now let's add some text to our page we're going to scroll down and add some text to the main uh area of my page I'm going to add a Content block and drop all the text that I want in this section so I'm going to go ahead and pull my approved text from my school admin I'm going to go ahead so I'm going to go ahead and pull my text in here now um similar to other um word processing systems you have all of the uh options up here to edit I can go ahead and format my text I want to make sure all my text is at least 14 points on maybe I want to go ahead and play around with my header to make that a little bit bigger so on and so forth now I can play around with some other things in this content box I can add hyperlinks I'm simply going to um highlight the text that I want to add a hyperlink and go ahead and add a hyperlink there make sure that your hyperlinks aren't ambiguous um that is another accessibility Pro tip but any link that you want to go ahead and hyperlink within the text you're going to be able to do that you're also going to be able to add media if I come over here I'm going to be at able to have a table I'm going to be able to add a picture and I'm going to be able to embed videos when I'm adding media I'm going to Simply place my cursor where I want that media to be embedded and then come up and select the widget that I want so let's say I want to insert an image I'm going to click the image icon and Source the image from my computer I'll go ahead and immediately give it my 2 to 8 words of alt text and I can go ahead and reset this image here I like to just delete the last number to keep that image proportional or I can edit it with my cursor now once the image is here I can go ahead and format this within the text as I like and I can even make this image a hyperlink dropping a hyperlink there now when folks click on that image they'll be taken to that URL if that URL is outside my website um as true with any hyperlink I'm going to want that to open in a new page so when they follow that link they don't lose your school's website now I can also embed a video I can invent a video in my content box with the same logic I'm going to go ahead and place my cursor where I want that video to populate I'm going to come over and click the play button now I'm going to go ahead and grab the URL for the video that I want to embed whether that video is from YouTube or Vimeo or whether I've uploaded it to my edlio video gallery I'm simply going to grab the URL drop bit here I don't have to know how to Source the embed code because it finds it for me and embeds the video directly in my content box let's check out some other uh page block elements we've seen our photo element at the top let's see what some other options for our photo page block might be so I can go ahead and in this time upload a variety of images and as soon as I upload multiple images is um remember I can access my settings wheel and decide if I want those photos to be a um Photoshop or to stack like a mini photo gallery so let's leave this 1 and rotate we're going to give our photos some quick alt text descriptions 2 to 8 words all right and then I'm going to come up um and add the exact photo option in my side column make a little mini photo gallery in that side column there um and allow you all to see what that would look like all right we can also add file page block when we pull the file page block you'll notice that any file type is accepted um however if I upload a PDF I'm going to be able to embed that PDF directly in the page like that example with the student athlete Sports handbook that we saw we would go ahead and simply pull that file from our computer or cloud service and when we have that PDF loaded we're going to want to make sure regardless of the file type that we have a clear uh file name here so that folks know why they would uh click that link to open the file that's because um we have a PDF so we have this option to have a small medium or large embedded version of the PDF directly in page um but for all documents what is going to show is just the file name hyperlink so we want to make sure again that that file name is clear if the page block collapses on you like that just go ahead and click it again um it hasn't disappeared hasn't deleted your work it's still there for you we can go ahead and rename and make sure that that um name is really clear um as well as for folks who are using screen readers or maybe translation services they're going to know why they would click on that PDF to open now I could keep adding additional files here maybe I have a lot of documents to share I'm making a staff page that I'm going to go ahead and utilize our password protected areas to go ahead and make available just for a staff I'm sharing all sorts of rubrics or insurance information those password protected areas you can learn about in our intro to user management study hall um I could go ahead and create a section with all that information keep uploading different file type let's give another example here so we have I non PDF file type and I can simply collapse that section now this is available for file blocks to make so that I have that PDF embedded in my page but folks can scroll especially on mobile without getting caught in a really long PDF like for example a student handbook that I've uh uploaded I can make my page really easy to um navigate by using these collapsible sections folks are going to go ahead and um see what I put in this title box here and voila only what is in bold here is going to show up on the page a good example of a collapsible box sections a good example of collapsible box um boxes and a use of calypso boxes is this page as we can see we've got a lot of um media at the top I've got some um uh photoshop's displaying some important enrollment information grabbing folks attention I've got some key links and then I got a list of all of the programs where we have a lot of information listed here but it's really easy to navigate and to find the program that you want to read about and simply on collapse that section so that is an example of how you might use um collapsible boxes aside from um the example we made here of using files now we can add some news and events page blocks to our Pages this is such that just like with our Athletics page example we have new news posted to a particular those category and we want that news when it is published to also publish here onto this page we're simply going to grab that category maybe it's the main category from my website or any of my additional categories that I can pull on to this page such that again anything that's posted under news and announcements is now going to also publish to this page and same logic with my calendar let's add to our side columns we start to get some um symmetry here on our page I can go ahead and pull the relevant calendar for this page maybe I have a um a calendar for the particular program that I'm that I'm creating the page for folks can see any events that are relevant for that program here now I can also add buttons and links buttons are like glorified hyperlinks they allow us to create links um with bright colors and bold font that uh grab folks attention right so um in order to create a button we're going to go ahead and grab the link that we want to share I'm going to click the button once I added the button page block and I'm going to drop that URL here in this case I'm taking folks outside of my website so I want to make sure to open in a new tab let's go ahead and widen the screen a little bit for you all and then I'm going to go ahead and replace add label with the text that I want to display on the page now I can go ahead and add multiple buttons maybe I have more resources to share with folks um again simply grab your url click on the button drop the URL if you're taking them outside your website go ahead and have it open in a new tab and replace add label with the text that describes the link again we're going to launch to create um a clear function of the link so folks know why they would click this button what the call to action here is now you have some choices on how you want these buttons to look you can always click the page block and look for that settings menu and go ahead and change your button block settings based on the primary colors that were chosen with your site's design to go ahead and decide which button color is going to help your buttons uh stand out let's go ahead and use our Domino to reorder our sections as needed I want to go ahead and pull my buttons up to the top here and while we're up here let's go ahead and add our alt text because our accessibility settings are turned on so without adding alt text we're not going to see these photos displayed on the it's simply not going to let us publish them so again let's give our 2 to 8 words of description I'm going to go ahead and just give a quick description for demonstration purposes and I have my accessibility setting turned on for my site so I don't even have to worry too much about my ALT text because the accessibility a uh tool is going to use edlio AI to note if this field um alternate text I'm giving is sufficient and if not it's going to go ahead and uh Rectify all accessibility issues including sufficient alt text for me so that takes a huge load off of me as the web admin let's had a few other pieces let's go ahead and add our supply list page block now supply list is a feature with teacher lists it's also to be found here in your column and your excuse me in your hamburger menu supply lists this is a feature available for both web admin as well as uh teacher standard users so if I have a teacher dashboard I'm going to simply be able to come to upload and manage lists on teacher lists when I'm here going to search my school by my School's zip code find my school review any current lists upload my new supply lists for the year and then I'm going to give teacher lists a day or 2 to go ahead um and process my Supply and then I'll be able to go ahead and pull those lists onto my page so whether I'm going to pull them on to all School Pages as an admin or into my teacher page as a teacher it's going to make school supply shopping really easy for my parents and we'll go ahead and see an example when we publish our page now my last option is adding a staff page block we can add a staff page block particularly in this side column here or towards the top of the page just just like on our Athletics page example to give folks um a contact person a point of contact for the um contents of the page that we're writing about so I'm writing about um our pedagogy at our school I want to go ahead and Link the head of learning maybe a head teacher maybe my principal I can go ahead and pull from all my user management the teachers that I can pull onto this page if I have added their position here I can go ahead and search by the position so I'm going to be able to go ahead and search all my teaching staff any people that you see greyed out are um accounts that have been disabled they've moved on from the school so they are not going to public to the page even if we pulled them on here we're not going to have to worry about that again we can go ahead and pull let's say our Arts teachers that we want to go ahead and highlight here on on the page again I can use my Domino to pull these folks towards the top of the page um make it uh really easy for folks to find their contact information we have their send um email form that's automatically pulling uh from our staff directory here onto the page if I want to add or delete any staff in the staff block I can go to manage staff maybe I want to say oh forgot to add Mr Benson we want him here also as a point of contact or um we're going to pull off Mrs uh Merona until um uh we go ahead and get a profile photo for her again we can make any edits that we need always remember the settings wheel you can play around with the um staff block display settings if you don't have staff photos uh uploaded for folks you can go ahead and turn those off again all of the information that's displaying here for this staff you can learn how to upload in the enter to user management study hall the other reason you might use staff blocks is to create a customized staff directory so let's say your regular staff directory um that we have here in our site um we have a plug-in placed staff directory where it's going to pull everyone alphabetically onto the page with the information that we indicate in our staff directory settings so here we just have names and emails um here we have another um staff directory example that gives some profile photos so on and so forth we can show positions we can hide those profile photos but everyone is basically just an alphabetical order it's a little simpler here right well if you want to create a customized staff directory because you want to create a staff directory where you're dividing admin from teachers or you're um presenting your staff by grade level or um by Department that is where staff blocks um can become really useful we're going to come and and we can pull on the staff that we want to show up on this page we can simply pull all our staff or we can search by those positions maybe I want to highlight all my teaching staff as long as I put the position in the user management when I upload my user I'm going to be able to use these not only to have that information display um really helpful for the parents and school Community visiting your site but also really useful for you to create again those um uh you know specific customized staff directory we're able to share staff based on their function of the school to the page that you're creating again I can always come to my settings wheel and find the best layout for my um uh my stack block here when we publish we're going to see how this really looks because again we have a lot of disabled teachers um that maybe have moved on over the years we can go ahead and delete them later but it's always great to keep them disabled just in case we need to act access any of their teacher pages later we can rest assured none of these folks are going to publish to our page only the folks that are still have active accounts all right so with that we've added all the content to our page let's go ahead and save a draft and our draft has been saved and now we can do a few things I can go ahead and access my accessibility report it it has already found 2 accessibility issues for me that I want to go ahead and resolve before publishing my page now this is um the accessibility tool with edlio AI that I'll go ahead and show you how to use um you can go ask discuss with uh full suite at edlio.com um the details of adding the accessibility tool to your account again reach out to full suite at edlio.com or to your relationship manager to learn more about the accessibility tool now not only do we have the accessibility tool when we have a draft if I have that added to my account I can also come up to the actions menu that's just been populated and I can preview this draft now you can see what your page looks like on a desk tablet and phone so I can you know if I know a lot of people are joining my website from the phone how does my layout work can all of the content be accessed how does that um uh um supply list um that I uploaded um in the pdf version show looks like here um where we didn't embed that PDF so let's go back and embed that make sure that we can see what that example is going to look like so on and so forth I can also do a free accessibility scan with the wave tool you can learn how to use this a little bit more in our accessibility study hall this is a um manual sort of DIY option altern to the accessibility report that will go ahead and scan your page for accessibility issues and explain to you how you can go ahead and manually fix those issues so let's go down we previewed our page we've found some things to change we want to go ahead and again give a preview of this PDF directly in the page I chose the medium-sized version so let's go ahead and show our report we can see that there's some alt text issues but that's it for um you know grave accessibility issues we can fix those automatically with a edlio AI we also have some notices um that these are not fixed with edlio AI but but they're um different you know um um notes for you to be aware of as the web admin that we've added a PDF here and the edlio AI cannot yet know if that PDF is accessible again we go more into this in the accessibility uh study hall the best practice is to avoid um adding PDFs to the extent possible and add as much content native to your page as possible because then you can rest assured that that content is accessible um if you're going to add PDFs you're going to want to go ahead and uh separately outside of your CMS make sure that PDF is accessible there are some resources on The Help Center to help you uh learn how to check your PDF for accessibility it also lets us know we pulled that video from YouTube not from our video gallery here in edlio our video gallery here in edlio um automatically has a lot of accessibility features for us including closed caption and transcript generation in contrast when we pull something from YouTube um we don't know if it's accessible so again you'll want to manually check that that video is accessible it has appropriate create closed captions Etc if you don't use a um video service like video YouTube or Vimeo um you can definitely rely on our video um Gallery media service to help you uh store videos and create those accessibility features finally it's going to let us know that um our text that we've added um is above the desired reading grade level when we're thinking about reaching everyone we want to read right between a sixth and ninth grade level so maybe we want to go ahead and take my text um and ask a AI service like chat GTP or Gemini to go ahead and uh make edits to my text such that it hits that 6 to ninth grade reading level again these notices don't have to be resolved for my page to be accessible but there are things that um we want to uh make sure that we have an ion we can go ahead and fix those issues those alt text um those alt text issues with edlio AI with quick click of a button the more issues that we have the the more seconds that elua AI is going to take to fix that um up to about a minute or so you can go ahead and take a sip of your coffee and let a a Leo AI do the work for you all right so it gives me a summary of my fixes I can always rerun the accessibility report if I want to be doubly sure and publish when I am ready all right now my page is published let's go back to our page section and see some additional page options that we can add to our section so we've added a blank page I can also link to another page this is great to create links to features or maybe 2 um outside links from our website I'm going to Simply drop the name of the page that I want to uh display in the section and then the URL I'm folks outside my website so I'm giving that secure link prefix https s stands for secure and having that open in a new tab saving when I'm done now I said um that linking to another page is most useful to link to outside websites or to maybe features that you want to um you know highlight in this section why did I not say to other Pages well if you want to move a page from 1 Section to the other you can always come to 3 dots 3 dots always lets you edit you can edit the page itself or you can come down and move this page to a different section you of course can grab this page as URL come to public pre public View and you can see how this page looks so we can see our hero image at the top we can see our bered crumbs I'll show you how you can keep these on or turn these off in your settings I've got my growing section menu we're going to add some more stuff there I've got my buttons my text my embedded media my staff blocks with my send email forms which I can fill out um protecting my email addresses we have our uh email-based form as the default I've got my um Photoshop here I've got my collapse section holding my embedded medium-sized PDF I can always whoops let's scroll back up past our staff blocks there now I can always click my link and then see that PDF in its own window I can go ahead and print I can save um but that allows me to preview that PDF without leaving the page in contrast non- PDF files are going to look like this simply a file name hyperlink and if I click that file it's going to go ahead and download to my um to my device in this case it's acsv I've got the news pulling to this page and I've got my uh staff blocks here um you'll notice in my page I could have even added a staff search bar um so that it makes really easy to search all the staff that I pulled onto this page scrolling back up a few things we have in our side column we want to point out we've got our events calendar we've got our uh our stacked photos here um excuse me our photo Shuffle here if we click stacked those 3 would be stacked vertically on top of each other so you have those choices and we have our supply list that we've gone ahead and uploaded so if I'm a parent of an incoming fifth grader I can come click here see the entire supply list and add to a variety of stores based on my region I might also have um Walmart and a few other options here so as a parent I can go ahead and add these uh school supplies to a with 1 Click now you'll notice these are all name brand that's simply a setting in teacher list that's not something um that is obligatory you can choose the generic brand or that every um uh item be the same and then it goes ahead and choose is a common uh name brand for the supply list all right so um that is what our our pedagogy page looks like and our growing section menu I can come and add other pages to my section I can add a form maybe I have a visit form a donation form um any type of form that I want to create for after school programs um so on and so forth back to school donations I can see here which forms are open and closed that I can go ahead and pull into my section that of course is accessed via our forms um tool major there now you can also add videos photo albums calendars and links what are these for well this is going to allow you to create a mini video gallery here um in your page section so you instead of linking your entire video gallery which you can add as many videos as you want here and then folks sort through all of those you're creating a sub Gallery here adding your videos and the exact same way that we go over in the intro to edlio CMS study hall but creating a sub video gallery just related to this section so you can create a curated group of videos or photos events or links based on this section all right the very last thing I want to show you is how can we link this section to our site navigation menu well we could go from our hamburger menu to site management to settings and add the section or page that way or we can come to our 3 dots and click add to site navigation now I'm adding my R pedagogy page it's going to push this to the bottom of my site navigation menu all accordion out here and remember I can always use my Domino to go ahead and change the order of that item to be exactly where I want on my site navigation menu and again remember um it can always be a really good idea to leave that section menu so that I only link my R pedagogy page and all those other Pages if we refresh we'll see our form here as well all um all the other pages in my section menu then become visible to folks simply by clicking on our pedagogy without having to link all of the pages possible in your site navigation menu because we want to keep our site navigation menu as clean as possible so that's just a brief um explanation of the difference between all the pages in our category page management and the uh pages and features that we find here on our site navigation menu once you've created the page you want to find you want to situate that page on your site in a way that makes it easy for folks to find um and uh that is your will have to take that step to add to your site navigation menu always making to save when you are done the very last thing I want to show you is down here at settings you are going to be able to control your page settings down here at pages here is where you're going to go ahead and be able to um change your layout for future and or existing pages and adjust those breadcrumbs um that you see at the top of the page always remembering to save your changes when you are done remember any further
