Want to elevate your Edlio Pages skills? Last month we offered our Pages 101 Webinar for Beginners and this month we're taking it to the next level with this Advanced Pages Overview. We'll take a look at the different options that come with the Pages module, including Category Options, SEO, and Password-Protected Areas.

Alright everybody, I think we are ready to get started. Thank you so much for joining us today for this My Edlio webinar. Today we are going to be looking at our pages feature where we going a little more in depth today. Last month that we looked at our pages feature but that was more of a crash course or 101 if you will, Pages for Beginners, where we built out a simple page for our school newspaper the Edlio Gazette. I'll come over here. It is  a good-looking page if I do say so myself. I see we have a Hero image up top here to kind of draw viewer in here and a real dynamic image there.  I always love the use to Hero image especially when we go the full width here. Remember I showed you last time we could do a constrained which would stay within these borders over here but instead we went the full width really really love that looks so much. I'll come down here. We have a photo here we're using the section menu over here, a staff block, we used a button here to link to our student journalism awards. We have a little about us section here, a little content block. Down here we have a PDF that we are displaying,  looks pretty good with one of our past issues of the Edlio Gazette. And down here we have embedded a video. Alright now what are we going to do today? We already built out this page it looks really good. Today we're going to take it to the next step. We'll be looking at some more things we can do with this specific page and all the powerful tools within the Edlio CMS that will allow you to kind of take this page to the next level and have more control over your content. Alright so let's get started. So the first thing we want to do is log in where admin site know I'm logged in right now as a web admin which means I have access to all of the pages within our school site.  We can get to pages by either going to pages right here or hamburger drop-down menu page management and pages. Alright awesome, now the first thing we'll see here is that we have category pages and personal pages Now remember personal pages these are specific to the user that is logged in right now. So up here we see that that is me up there my little icon there these are my pages, these are Daniel Benson's pages. I am the only one that can edit these. If we go back over to our pages our category pages here- these are school specific pages these are ones that any web admin can come in edit. To start off you have your categories. You have six categories to start with. Right now we're using all six. Let's hop up here to our category options Alright so here in our category options there a few different things that we can do here. First things first if you want to see all of the categories for all of your school pages here- let me go to this public link here. This will show you the different categories that we have and all of the sections that are underneath them. I have a lot of sections there under miscellaneous but these are all of those sections within each of these individual categories. So if you want to go ahead and change this name up here, Site Categories you can do that here. Alright now we have the categories list. Now you can choose whether or not you want to hide or show any of these. I would suggest using this if you really want to pare down the number of categories you're you're showing there and that way you can kind of pare down the organization of your your page management here I'd say this is a great tool to do that. If you just want to get on just a couple of categories there I think this is a great way to do that. It kind of depends, every site is different. If you have a bunch of different pages, lots and lots of pages, and you know it might help to have all six categories, definitely recommend using them all. But if you ever want to go ahead and hide some you can do that. We'll come down here to additional info. So let me click on this right now and show you what this does. Right now it says we have classes and right now we are showing them. I'll click on the public site link and now we see all of the different classes that we have here. We'll see that the most classes are under kindergarten with six classes, four classes here in tenth grade team. So any classes that are added to your Edlio CMS are going to show up here. Now let's come back over here to our category options and I'm going to come over here and select hide Alright I'm going to just save those changes. I'll come back over here to this department page. We'll refresh it. There we go we are not showing those at classes anymore. Totally up to you if want to show those. It could give visitors to your school site way to get to specific classes if they want. Totally up to you. Right now we'll just keep them hidden. Next up let's take a look at our breadcrumbs. Breadcrumbs are links at the top of each page. They let a user know which category section and page they are currently viewing. Let's hop over to our Elio Gazette page. Right up here these are our breadcrumbs. We're on the Edlio Gazette page right now in the Edlio Gazette section, which is the clubs and activities category. So I click on that. These are all of the pages within that clubs and activities category See here we have the Edlio Gazette at the bottom. Brings us right here to that page. So if we come back over to our category options we have a few different options about whether or not you want to display those breadcrumbs. Now the first one is always on all pages. This is going to override any settings on individual pages which we have down here. These will ensure that no matter what settings you have on an individual page. Lets say on one page you have "do not display breadcrumbs" this is going to override that. This is always on all pages. This is going to override that so that they show on every single page. We can turn them off, never on any page, or have them according to individual page options. Again with each page you have the ability to turn those on or off. I'll show you how we can do that here in just a little bit. Your Edlio site automatically defaults to this always on all pages. It's totally up to you if you want to have those on or off. I will come down here to our side panel. Now this is just going to let you know where you want the side panel to go Now this side panel includes the section menu.  So if we come down here we have our little section menu here and then within the side panel we also have a staff block, and this button here, Right now your Edlio site defaults to having that side panel on the right if you want to change that to on the left you can select that here. And then last here we have our file type icon that you can choose whether to show or hide file icons next to the uploaded files on each page. Now showing or hiding file icon types is a global change that will affect all pages on your site, so we do have that set up to show by default. Let's go ahead and save these changes. Alright awesome we saved those. Let's come back over here to our categories. Let's say we want to rename one of these categories. Looks like this one is misspelled so let's come over here click that pencil icon. I will come up here hit that pencil icon we'll change that to and. There we go. It automatically saved and will come back over here to our categories and then you go. It has been updated. That is how you can go ahead and rename one of these categories. Let's say you built out of page you know you have all six categories showing you're not sure where you built this specific page out that you're looking for, you always use our search pages tool. Come up here, see where we build out the Edlio Gazette page. Let's see we have it here under the clubs and activities category under the Gazette section. I'll go ahead and click into there Alright now this is our section here for the Elio Gazette so we have that main page The Edlio Gazette and we see we have this little icon here that means this page is currently in the site navigation for our site. So we come over here to the public facing site we go up here. Under activities we have the Edlio Gazette there that because we have it in our site navigation. I will come back over here. We have also set up an archives page so remember any page added to your section here is going to show up in your section menu over here So if we add another page right now this will show up, if we add another page within this section it'll show up here in this section menu. Alright now let's start up here under actions. Let's see what we can do with this specific section. The first thing you can do is go to public view. On a live site this is what will bring you to that first page, the very beginning of the section. So this is bringing us to that Edlio Gazette page. Come back over here we can add it to our site navigation, we can unpublish this entire section, we can move it. So let's say we don't want to have this section under clubs and activities anymore. We can move it to one of the other categories. I do like it under clubs and activities will just keep it here for now. We can also totally delete the entire section if we want to, but we do not want to right now. Alright so we'll come over here real quick. We're going to add a new page here in a second. Let's go ahead and click on these three dots over here. Now the first thing you could do is select edit which would do the same thing as selecting the page itself. Here we can do public view which we just did before. We can view in site navigation. Again, this is already been added to site navigation,we have that little icon there. If we click down here this will allow us the opportunity to add to site navigation instead of viewing it like right here. Publish history Let's click into that. So this is going to show you all of the changes made to a specific page over a given period of time. It looks like all the changes on his page have been made on 10/28 and 11/15. But you can go back and just see each individual change and who it was made by. Pretty cool. I'll come back over to our Edlio Gazette section. And then we'll come over here. We can either copy a specific page so just build out a whole new copy of that page, we can move this individual page. Before I showed you how we can move it to a new category, now we can move it to a different category and section. So say we want to keep it within the clubs and activities category here but want to move it a different section within the same category we can do that over here. And lastly, we can delete the page if you want but we do not want to do that. So next up let's go ahead and create a new page. I showed you before what we could do with a blank page. We built out that page last week for the Edlio Gazette here. using that blank page feature. We can link to another page. Let's say you know we have our issues housed somewhere else, say we're warehousing them on an external site. We can link to that page here or we could actually go ahead and use one of these feature pages down here. One of my favorite parts of the the pages module here are feature pages, how it works with our forms feature, videos feature, photo albums, featured calendar, and links feature. Let's use that forms feature. I'm going to select form. I've already built out a form within the Edlio CMS. So right now I'm going to go through and select it Alright. Here we go, we have the option as as to whether or not we wanted to open a new tab or in the same window. Let's open this in a new tab. I always like to give people the option kind of stay on the page that they're on and still see whatever new information they're trying to see. Se we'll click save. It has been added to the section, so when we come back over to the Edlio Gazette page that we were just on and we refresh, we can see down here in the section menu we now have our student newspaper registration. We'll click on that. And here we have our student newspaper registration form added to our Edlio Gazette section here. So this is somewhere where students if they want to join the writing staff they can come in here, enter that information, and then click submit. Pretty awesome. Alright now that we've added that, let's go ahead and add a new page here, one of these other feature pages. Let's see. Let's add some links that we think our writers can use when coming to this page. We see up here this is our reformed links feature. We have our specific section these links going to tied to of the Edlio Gazette. You can set a different topic if you like, but right now we're going to add keep it there with main. Go ahead and click add link. all right so we'll title this Student Journalism Resources and this is where you going to go ahead add that link. If you want to add a short description here There. And click save, Alright, awesome. So we have our first set of links there. So let's actually go ahead here and again will refresh this page that we keep going back to, our  Edlio Gazette. And we have our links page now added to our section menu. So we have this first one here, Student Journalism Resources available and the description I wrote as well. Let's add another one. Add the link. And we'll click save. I will come back over here. I will refresh this page. There we go. All of our links are there. Pretty cool little feature. I want to come back here to The Edlio Gazette section to to show you our page options for individual pages. Let's click into this page here. We come over here to actions, page options. We want to leave. Now we are here at our page options. This includes some great stuff for SEO search engine optimization. The first thing I'm going to look at your is specifying a friendly URL. We recommend using a short and personalized URL that reflects the content on the page that we're looking at. In this case, we're looking at the Edlio Gazette page let's go ahead and just make this a little friendlier here so we'll have that first part of your school site URL and then slash apps slash pages and then whatever you want here. So in this case, we'll make it at Edlio Gazette. Next up we have our page title tag. This should be an understandable and unique title in the top bar of your browser. It will help boost your site's ranking in search result so we recommend making your title short and easy to understand and not use the same title for every page on your site. In this case we have the page shuttle tag as Edlio Gazette for the page the section things like that just like shorten this we want to just Edlio Gazette will just keep it as is right now. Maybe we'll actually take out this middle section here. We still have Edlio Gazette and and Edlio College Prep. Alright, so next up we have our page meta description. Page meta descriptions are short summary of web pages that appear in search engine results. By default every page on your site has the same meta description. It's set up when your site was initially launched. But you can actually go in here and customize the description for each individual page. So we recommend definitely keeping it under 160 characters. I think you know the length of a Twitter post. Tell readers why they should go to your site. If you have a call to action this is a great great place to put that. Let's go ahead, right now we have that generic one set up for the entire Elio College Prep site- For over 150 years Edlio College Prep has propelled Los Angeles best and brightest to reach their full potential. Apply today! Let's go ahead and switch that up since we are doing this for The Edlio Gazette page. Alright now let's come down to our keywords. Keywords are going to help search engines find your site by indicating the content on the page. It's kind of up in the air right now how much these actually help with search engine results. We definitely say best practice is to only include a few key words. I have a couple here. We'll leave these. or maybe we'll also just put School Newspaper Alright, we'll come down here to our additional header tag. These are used mainly for reposting your page on social media like Facebook, Twitter things like that. In putting a meta tag it really ensures that the post appears all you want it to, title, pictures, summary text, things like that- make sure that they are formatted correctly. if you have an advanced tag please reach out to our Edlio Support Team, they would be happy to assist with that request. Let's go ahead and save changes down here. all right one last thing I want to show you here. Let's say you have a page that you only want certain people to be able to access. We have what's called password protected areas for certain pages, sections, categories, things like that. I built out a page called Edlio Gazette Staff Only. I only want people who are on the staff of the Edlio Gazette to be able to see that. So right now if I go into the public link here of the section we'll see over here on the side with the section menu, Edlio Gazette Staff Only. If I click that I can go into that, anybody can go into that right now on the public facing site. I want to to hide this page with a password. Let's do that. I'm going to come back over to the admin site and I'm going to go up here to the hamburger drop-down menu page management password protected areas. Now the first thing we want to do is set up a new area. Click this top right corner let's give it a name. Now we have to select what it is that we are protecting. We want to go in here and add the specific page that we are protecting. We'll click add pages and features. I'll come down here what's find the category- clubs and activities. I will find the section, Edlio Gazette and the specific page Edlio Gazette Staff Only. I will add that to the area. Now we need to determine who is going to have access to this page. We can add anybody here from our user management. If I go here Add them here. I have added somebody now to this password protected area. This person is the only person right now that will be able to access this page from the public facing site. Remember in order to add somebody here they need to be added to your user management. We get this question a lot. A lot of schools want to add a password protected area for let's say only parents can access. You don't want to go ahead and add every single parent's email address to user management. What you can do with a quick work around is the other user management by going to site management, user management. You can create a generic user something like School Parents as the username and create a password and only distribute that to the parents of the school, so they will only be able to access just that little portion, just that page there. It's a quick work around if you want to go ahead and give a certain amount of people access to a password protected page but you don't want to add them to your user management. We see a lot of school use this for that or for maybe a staff intranet kind of thing where you know if you just want staff information in this one area. Because your staff should be added to your user management here anyway. We see that a lot. That's probably one of the biggest uses of password protected areas that we get. Let me go back to our public facing site. I'll go back to that page and show you what happens when we try to access that password-protected page now. Alright. There we go. So, in order to access this page I need to login with that username and password. Right now that user I just added there is the only one that can access that page. Right here, that is the only person that can access that page right now all.
